Action
Quinine Tablets are primarily used for the treatment of malaria, particularly in cases where the malaria parasite is resistant to other antimalarial drugs such as chloroquine. It is effective against Plasmodium falciparum, the most dangerous type of malaria parasite. Quinine works by interfering with the parasite's ability to metabolize hemoglobin, leading to its death. Additionally, quinine has been historically used for the treatment of nocturnal leg cramps, although this use is now less common due to potential side effects.
Dosage and Administration
- Adults:Malaria: The usual dose is 650 mg (1 tablet) three times daily for 7 days. The tablets should be taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal upset.Leg Cramps: 200-300 mg at bedtime, but this use is not recommended due to the risk of serious side effects.
- Children:Malaria: Dosing is based on body weight, typically 10 mg/kg three times daily for 7 days. The total daily dose should not exceed the adult dose.
